About NS’s OV-ebike

As the largest mobility company in the Netherlands, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) understands better than anyone how essential mobility is. To make door-to-door travel even easier for passengers, NS collaborates with various partners. Noord is one of these partners and is closely involved in the organization of the electric public transport bike: the OV-ebike. You can read more about it in the customer case of Nederlandse Spoorwegen below.

The Challenge for NS

Each year, over 5 million rides are made using the OV-fiets, a service NS has been offering since 2008 to support travelers in their door-to-door journey. To enable passengers to cover longer distances from the station quickly and easily, NS decided to test an electric version of the OV-fiets. For this project, NS sought an e-mobility partner with market expertise to set up a one-year pilot. After evaluating several candidates, Noord was selected as the preferred partner.

Pilot Feedback

Edward: “Noord is a partner that thinks along with us about (im)possibilities and offers room for customization. Thanks to the shared enthusiasm and expertise, the collaboration is going very well.”

Feedback from the initial pilots has been very positive. Edward Douma:
“Travelers enjoy riding the OV-ebike; they are very satisfied with the pedal assistance and the distance they can cover.”

“We look forward to a successful collaboration throughout the remainder of the trial, during which we’ll continue learning under what conditions NS can integrate the OV-ebike into its door-to-door services,” says Edward Douma.

Future Plans from 2025 Onward

Following the successful pilot, the service has now expanded to four stations (Maastricht, Groningen Central, Driebergen-Zeist, and Arnhem), and the agreement has been extended in 2025. Noord will continue to supply and maintain the e-bikes in the coming years.
